Chevy’s inviting face and welcoming manner drew in everyone who met him. His natural ability to attract a crowd earned him the nickname “Rock Star.” He was pack leader Silver’s deputy and later, reluctantly stepped into the pack leader role. Yet he would happily tolerate an infant pulling his tongue.
Chevy was Geof’s first Best in Show dog, winning Best Brace in multiple all-breed and national specialty shows along with his half-brother Rustle. Chevy helped many junior handlers as a willing loaner dog, especially at Canadian shows that required junior handlers to demonstrate their skills with a dog they had never shown before. With no previous Rally Obedience experience, Chevy served as demo dog at a national specialty as the judge walked the course to demonstrate correct performance. Chevy performed as directed perfectly, except he would not sit in a show ring. His expression clearly told the judge he would not be tricked into violating his conformation training.
Chevy always sensed what visiting dogs needed to be comfortable, whether it was a little space from the pack, a nudge to join the play, or a demonstration of how to transverse a doorway or earn a treat. Chevy inherited his “sneeze police” role from his Mother Tammy and took it to a new level. When one of us sneezed, Chevy instantly appeared to check on us and administer healing face licks. Distance was immaterial, and several of our doors bear the claw marks of dutiful Chevy desperate to come to our aid. Someday researchers may identify the sneeze reaction gene we suspect is part of the Keeshond genome, as Chevy’s sister and at least two of his sons demonstrate similar behavior.
